TREATMENTS BEST SUITED TO YOU

Ear wax, also known as Cerumen, is a natural yellow-orange coloured oil produced from hair linings and glands that are located in the ear canal. It will usually make its way through the outer ear canal to the opening of the ear. Once it reaches the entrance, it will either fall out naturally or it is removed when you wash.

Ear wax plays a huge part in protecting the ear:

  • It traps and prevents bacteria, dust, dirt and other fine foreign objects that enter the ear wax so they cannot travel any further.
  • Protects the skin of the ear canal from getting aggravated if water enters. The skin is extremely delicate and so the wax acts as a moisturising agent preventing dry, itchy & irritated ears.

Even though it is important for our ears to store wax, too much wax can cause a problem. In some cases, the glands over-produce wax so it cannot be easily removed from the ear naturally, resulting in impacted hardened wax. This causes a blockage and often can be extremely painful, even leading to temporary hearing loss.

Before any treatment is decided, a thorough examination of your ears will be completed to decide which treatment is best suited and safe to use.

MICRO-SUCTION

Microsuction is one of the most safest and effective solutions to removing wax & debris in the ears.

Either an endoscope, a tiny camera with lights, is used to enter the ear so the blockage is visible on the camera screen or a head/spectacle loup is used to view the ear canal with a bright magnified light. During both procedures, a tiny vacuum gently provides suction to remove the wax.

It is a relatively quick and controlled process causing no harm or discomfort.

EAR IRRIGATION

Along with micro suction, ear irrigation is also a safe and effective method of treating built up wax and foreign materials in the ear.  Ear irrigation is carried out in instances when micro-suction has not been successful or patients present with contra-indications to micro suction.

Specialised equipment is used to safely wash the wax out. A syringe-like tool is used to flush the ear slowly with warm water at a gentle pressure. It is usually longer than microsuction and can last up to thirty minutes. Ear irrigation is considered the traditional method of ear cleaning and although a relatively common procedure, there are risks and contra-indications associated with it. These will be discussed before any procedure.

EAR HOOK

If you present with perforated or damaged ear drums, micro-suction and ear irrigation can create further problems and therefore they are advised against. In these cases, manual methods of wax removal are preferred.

Specialised tools, also known as hooks or curettes, are used to remove the wax. Often this method is chosen if wax is located at the outer part of the ear. These tools are gentle, safe and pain-free & should only be used by professionals.
